Fantasy Football Mags - The Scoop on Fantasy Football Magazines

The last time I went to the magazine stand I counted ten different fantasy football mags. And I know that more than ten exist. There wouldn't be so many companies racing to get these fantasy football magazines out to people in June if they weren't selling well. Now the only reason why you might want to buy a fantasy football mag is that the majority of fantasy players still rely on the cheat sheets within these magazines to guide them during their fantasy drafts. Assuming you have created your own tiered fantasy football draft sheet, having your opponents use fantasy mag cheat sheets is to your advantage for four reasons:

1) The rankings within the fantasy magazines are outdated. They were projected in May in time for sending the magazines to print. The rankings do not take into consideration coaching changes, free agent pickups, injuries, or depth chart changes that occur during the summer and training camp.
2) The rankings are most likely not based on your league's scoring system. Fantasy football mags usually provide a chart that shows the type of scoring system they based the projections on. The rankings are essentially useless if the chart doesn't match your league's scoring system.

3) It seems like most fantasy football magazines go with a mainstream approach when ranking players. They don't seem to play their hunches within the cheat sheets. I've read in a couple different places that this is due to the fact many customers flip to the cheat sheets when looking for the right fantasy football magazine to buy. A customer is less likely to purchase a fantasy mag that goes against the flow on key players.

4) Comparing your own rankings to the fantasy magazine's rankings will indicate some sleeper and value opportunities. It may also indicate some players that you have ranked much lower than the fantasy football mag due to recent injuries, free agency, depth chart changes, even retirement.

If you're participating in an online draft, you will not know how your competition prepared. If you're attending a draft in person, take a glance around and see how many people are holding fantasy football magazines in their hands. The more the better as far as you are concerned. So go out and buy a couple fantasy football mags and use them only to research what some of your opponents are planning to use for your league's draft.
